Glory Of It All

An aerial view of Northern Iceland. (© Paul Taggart / Herd in Iceland) #

I remember when I was in middle school, my mom and I were talking about how my brother was stressed out about tests and college apps and stuff. I couldn't relate to what he was feeling, because I never felt that stress of a test, or something important coming up. Life was good in middle school. It was like elementary, but more fun. We got lockers and had a class schedule, and could somewhat choose what we wanted to do. At that moment, I was thinking, "What does it feel like to be stressed??? I don't think I'll ever have to deal with it..."

Now, I learned later what it means to be stressed, especially in college hahah. But I consider myself one who probably stresses less than the average person, maybe less than I should. When I say "should" I'm talking about worrying more about tests and school where I would probably perform better. Anywho, I don't stress that much, and it might be that I place my trust in the sovereignty of God, or that I sometimes brush things off and don't take it seriously enough. It's probably a mix of both, but main point is, I don't stress too often.

Today was stressful. I had to finish up a big homework for a class. It was due latest 6PM in class. It was 4:30 PM and I was working on it. I didn't know how to finish it so I had to ask a friend for help. Time was running out, and I kept thinking, "Man, just turn it in. You'll get like 70% on it...it's fine." And another part was like "Just keep going. Finish what you can." It was pretty stressful, knowing time was running out and I was so far from finishing.

But then a song I hadn't listened to in a while came on.

David Crowder Band - Glory Of It All

Oh the Glory of it all is:
he came here
for the rescue of us all
that we may live
for the glory of it all

oh he is here
for redemption from the fall
that we may live
for the glory of it all

And I sat there and thought, "What is the end for all this? If not for God's glory, then what? Why am I worrying so much?!?" That we may live for the glory of it all.

We need to take a step back from our busy lives. We need to re-realize the big picture. Take some time and reflect on where we are and why we're doing whatever we are doing. Take a breather and rest. And while we rest, remember the cross, and what it means in our lives.

Hi

Chilean miner Osman Araya (right) is welcomed by his wife Angelica as he comes out of the Fenix capsule after been brought to the surface on October 13, 2010 following a 10-week ordeal in the collapsed San Jose mine, near Copiapo, 800 km north of Santiago, Chile. It's been a while. Since December 31, 2009 LOL. But I was reading through other people's blogs and was inspired to finally update mine.

I am a selfish person. I know this, but there are distinct times when I catch myself and I'm like..."Damn Mark, you're so selfish."

For example. Today, at work, I was routinely going downstairs to check the mail for my boss. On the way, I run into one of the FA's (faculty assistants), Mina. Now, (here's my lame attempt at justifying myself), Mina is one of those people who talk excessively when trying to explain things. I never had to work directly under her, but she's given me work to do and I have heard stories from people about how she talks too much and what not (one guy said that she spent 5 minutes trying to explain to him what a rectangle was. "You know it's like a square, but a little longer. You know...a rectangle...."). Anyway, knowing that she's prone to talking too much, I just politely said hi and went on my way. I wanted to avoid any conversation where it would involve her just talking about herself and her life story and whatever (I know, I'm selfish), so I continued, but she was actually going the same way as me. I was a little ahead of her, trying to distance myself, but she kept up and just asked me, "How's everything?" I replied succintly, "I'm good. And you?" She said some stuff and went on her way. The whole time I was thinking, "ughh I hope she doesn't ask me if I'm busy and give me an extra errand to do and then have to explain the simple errand to me for 10 minutes...Just please don't talk to me." AHahaha I know, I'm messed up. Anyway, nothing happened and there I was walking to the mailroom when I finally realized how selfish I am. I don't want anything to do with her right now. I need to go back and do MY homework. I don't want to do any extra work. Me me me. And I think about it, I probably do this all the time. Damn Mark, you're selfish.

3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
-Phillipians 2:3

A verse that I am trying to meditate on. Selflessness. Can we really achieve it? Not by anything that we do or any effort we put in, but only through Christ. Seriously....

Anyway, thanks for reading this post. Here's to hoping that I continue to update semi/quasi-regularly.

What's in it for me

Yay first update since August 22.

What's in it for me?

Even though I try not to, like reeaaaally try not to, I think I subconsciously always ask myself this before I do anything. Bible says, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." I know this. And I try to keep it in mind whenever I'm dealing with people, with major decisions, with how I spend my time. Lately, God has been super humbling me. "I've given you the right to be called my son. I've given you a peace and joy that transcends all knowledge. I've given you a love like no other in Jesus' death on the cross. If I don't give you anything anymore EVER again, you should still be thankful for everything I've done for you already." Man. Super humbling.

What's in it for me?

Too much living for self-fulfillment. I've been so selfish with my time, my heart, my effort. I always ask myself, "Is there any point to this relationship?" "What am I going to get out of it?" "Is it even worth it?!"

Fall quarter was such a huge fail and success in so many different ways. I'm totally feeling when people say you feel busier and busier as you get older. Winter quarter 2010! REDEMPTION!

God's Love

7It[Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

-1 Corinthians 13:7

God's Love. So powerful, so moving, it would make someone (like me) believe in something so ridiculous, so contra-human, so unbelievable as the idea of a man (Jesus) dying on a cross and rising from the dead all because he loved me.

Is that so hard to believe? What exactly is faith?

1Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

-Hebrews 11:1

Of course, I didn't see Jesus die on the cross. I didn't see him rise from the dead. I didn't see his miracles and what not. But guess what. I have faith that he did all these things. I believe in my heart, in the sincerest of all things, that Jesus, in fact, 2000 years ago, was crucified, dead, and buried. 3 days later, he rose again from the dead. This resurrection wasn't just for kicks, or for fun, but it was the fulfillment of God's promise to us.

3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he took up our infirmities
and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God,
smitten by him, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
And who can speak of his descendants?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.

9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11 After the suffering of his soul,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

-Isaiah 53:3-12

I'm sorry that's a long passage (please read it all), but it shows how the prophecy was fulfilled. A prophecy that was made hundreds of years before Jesus walked this earth. It was a prophecy that God made before the creation of the world. God planned this all before it happened.

Something happened today that reminded me of all this. I've been in Europe for 2 months now. It's been hard spiritually. I'm not reminded of God everyday like I would be in school. I don't have the same accountability that I have at school, and it was really tough. But God doesn't disappoint. All he wants is for me to turn to him in the times that he sets before me.

Today, on our way back to my friend's home from central London, God provided me an opportunity to talk to him about what I've learned about Jesus' sacrifice and mercy on the cross. I got to share with him what the meaning behind the gospel is, the power of grace, and the faith we need to believe it. I told him that I feel so lucky, so blessed, that not by my own actions or heart, but by God's will, that I had come to know the love of Christ. He grew up the church, but over time, he realized that even Muslims, like us, believe so whole-heartedly of Mohammed, of the Qu'ran, that what seems right to them is right, and what seems right to Christian, must be right too. It's just "Christians", or those who profess to be Christians, that are being judgmental and saying these other religions are wrong, when there's no way of knowing what is right.

After about 20 minutes of talking back and forth on the train, this man right next to us was listening, and he decided to give us his two cents. He told us about love, and what it does to a person. If you love a person, you're blind to what they do, he said. Even if they disappoint you, even if they do something to hurt you, if you truly love them, it doesn't matter and all you want is them to love you back. God is the same. He knows you will sin, he knows you will break his heart in so many ways, he knows that your sin will kill his son Jesus, however, all he wants is for you to turn to him.

My time in Europe is about to end. I came in with a certain mindset of trying to fit this Christian mold. I wanted to make sure that the people I met, and the people I hung out with, to know that I was Christian. This was wrong, I realized, and I learned to simply do what was glorifying to God. It's not about what I do, but why I do it. Did I immerse myself into the world simply to play and have fun, or was it to build any sort of relationship and to point them to the cross?

Haha, I never update, even though I said I would. If you read this far, bless you :)

As far as I'm concerned with Europe, my 2 months in Europe was really eye-opening, and one of the best summers ever, but it has MOST definitely made me more proud to be American. GO USA!

Barcelona

Ever wondered what it feels like to live without responsibility? Come "study abroad" in Barcelona for a month in the summer.

Sun doesn't set until 9 or 10 here. People stay at the beach until 9 and after. Everything is just so chilllll. Dinner is at 9:30 to 10. Then people get ready to go out and party the night away.

Since it's summer, either you're on summer break, or you're here on vacation with friends, or maybe you're just unemployed, so there's nothing tomorrow and the cycle repeats and repeats. No responsibility.

Anyway, I've been having an awesome time since I've got here. Here are some pictures

True Story

True story.

You were born to be loved.

No. This is not some cry for love or attention or gay stuff or emo or anything. But listening to the famous Korean Christian song - 당신은 사랑 받기 위해 태어난 사람(I typed this! Go Korean 2A!) just makes it so clear.

You were born to be loved
And you are receiving that love through your life
The love from God that started since the beginning of the world
Becomes connected with us meeting each other
And your existence in this world
Is a very huge happiness for us
You were born to be loved
And you are receiving that love through your life

So deep. So true.

Anyway, this quarter has been a good one. Very manageable classes. No work. A lot of good memories. Next quarter is gonna be way busier. I might even have to quit work, but we'll see. I'm really excited for the summer. Quizás
voy a estudiar en España en el verano! Probablemente. Can't wait! And for STSM 2k9 - super excited for you guys!

Every moment God's love for us stays the same. Even when we have a bad day, even when we feel like we've hit some rock bottom because of our shortcomings, our sins, our regrets, God still loves us the same as he did when he created the universe. So reckon on Jesus' death on the cross 2000 years ago. Let's remind ourselves of what that means and how it has freed us from sin and death.

Don't forget, you were born to be loved.

I Now Pronounce You...

A group of desolate volcanic islets known by North and South Koreans as Dokdo and by Japanese as Takeshima, is seen in this aerial view photo taken July 14, 2008. South Korea last year briefly recalled its ambassador from Tokyo in protest after Japan said it would write about the longstanding dispute about the islands in school textbooks. (REUTERS/Korea Pool/Newsis)

Random picture I saw from a website, and it has nothing to do with what I'm going to write about, but whatever.

I went to a wedding today. Bruce and Linda's. After 10 years of being together since high school, they finally got married. Hope they have many, many years of happiness together. Hope their marriage can really spread the gospel through their love for each other.

Marriage is something else. There are the best of friends, family ties, but a marriage is the closest thing to how Jesus loves us (the church). The pastor said that marriage was given to us in order for the couple to know God more, to love God more, and to pronounce the gospel through their love for each other. I never thought it that way, but now it makes sense.

"50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce, according to Jennifer Baker of the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri."

That sucks to hear. 50% of couples find that their "true love" or whatever didn't turn out that way. What is true love? Is it something you have between your soulmate? Probably somewhere down the line, from all the movies we watched, we came up with our own skewed view of love.

Marriage yeah. It seems so far away. I'm not gonna worry about it anytime soon.
